Great piece.

Hoffman was great. He has an air about him that's hard to define. It's like how when you meet people in person you can kind of see some of the inner workings of their mind even if they're not necessarily transparent people. You can just read people. I think this applies to even the most masterful actors too, where you can glimpse the person within the person.

The thing about Hoffman's performances is he never really seems to be either pleased with himself or dissatisfied: he just sort of... is. He does well at embodying the piece. As if he were inside the mind of a person the character is based on were it a biographical piece. This type of empathetic imagination indicates genius. Someone who is doing more than remembering lines and matching emotional expressions.

I like how you point out how diverse his roles are. To be fair, many actors manage to pull off this level of authentic embodiment of a character. It's just that oftentimes they only manage to do it within a narrow range of archetypes--often being somewhat typecast. This could be because that's sort of the mind which the performer really knows and suits them best. Hoffman would appear to be someone able to deeply understand and portray many minds--never seemingly too distracted by his own. Really able to lose himself in there somehow.
